Suppose that you have a boiler (gas central heating furnace) that heats hot-water radiators in numerous rooms in your home. It works by boiling natural gas, making a line or grid of hot gas jets that fire ascending over water flowing through a grid of pipes. As the water pumps through the pipes, it captivates the heat energy and heats up. This provision is what we mean by a heat exchanger: the gas jets calm down and the water heats up.

A heat exchanger is a device that lets heat from a liquid or a gas (a fluid) to pass to a second fluid (another gas or liquid) without the two fluids needing to mix together or come into direct interaction. If that is not totally clear, reflect this. In concept, we could get the heat from the gas jets just by tossing cold water onto them, but then the flames would go out. The important principle of a heat exchanger is that it allocates the heat without transferring the fluid that carries the heat.

You will notice heat exchangers in all kinds of places, typically working to heat or cool buildings or serving engines and machines to work more proficiently. Air-conditioners and fridges, for instance, use heat exchangers in the reverse way from central heating systems: they eliminate heat from a section or room where it is not required and pump it away in a fluid to some other place where it can be discarded out of the way.
